Herb Geller (1928-2013), an alto saxophonist whose commanding, butterfly-like style was influenced by Benny Carter and who left his mark on dozens of West Coast jazz recordings in the 1950s under his own name and as a sideman, died on December 21. He was 85.
Herb and his first wife Lorraine, a pianist, were a power jazz couple in Los Angeles in the 1950s. But when Lorraine died suddenly at age 30 in 1958, Herb suffered a terrible emotional blow, alleviated only by world tours and a move to Hamburg, Germany, where he re-married and remained based until his death.
