John Tchicai & Steve Dalachinsky à "Souffle Continu" Vendredi 3 Decembre ...

Sometimes, I've the eery feeling to be so far out, I'm in the core of an absolute dream I'll never escape ! ...

"Hey dude take care with thoses beers ..." “Life with the Lions ” …

jazzblogca322 RIP, John Tchicai
The Danish website jazzblog.dk reports today that the seminal European free-jazz saxophonist John Tchicai has died at the age of 76. Avant-garde dansh guitarist and bandleader Pierre Dørge wrote here:
John Tchicai, 1936-2012
After struggling for several months after a stroke, John Tchicai on the night of 8/10 2012 kl. 0:45, still asleep in Perpignan.
It is a huge loss for all of us who loved John as a person and music maker. With the desire that we all will continue his charismatic and enigmatic music.
A true champion and inspiration — he is among the largest.
Sincerely,
Pierre Dorge
Elsewhere on the website, it’s reported that Tchicai, suffered a brain hemorrhage at the airport in Barcelona airport and was taken to a hospital in Perpignan, France, where he was recovering.
NewYorkEyeAndEarControl RIP, John TchicaiTchicai, who was born in Copenhagen and whose father was of Congolese descent, moved to New York in 1963. He played with such musicians as John Coltrane, Albert Ayler, Don Cherry and Cecil Taylor, and appears on Coltrane’s album Ascensionand Ayler’s New York Eye and Ear Control. Tchicai returned to Denmark a few years later, and among his projects was the free jazz orchestra Cadentia Nova Danica, shown in this clip playing in 1967 in Molde, Norway.

Tchicai also performed on John Lennon’s 1969 “noise music” album Unfinished Music No.2: Life with the Lions.
Tchicai’s homeland supported his art. In 1977, the saxophonist he was the first jazz musician to receive a three year-composing stipend from the Denmark’s Ministry of Culture. In 1990, he received a lifetime grant from the ministry. Here is Tchicai, who by the 1980s had switched from alto to tenor saxophone, playing with Dorge’s New Jungle Orchestra:

In the early 1990s, he moved with his wife to California, where he collaborated with such musicians as Henry Kaiser and Wadada Leo Smith. In 2001, he relocated to the south of France.
Here is Tchicai leading a trio of younger Danish musicians last year through his piece Multicoloured Bridge:

Rest in peace, John Tchicai.

Toots Thielemans fête ces 90 ans à New York

US, Brazilian stars celebrate jazz harmonica virtuoso Toots Thielemans' 90 years in concert

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Jazz harmonica virtuoso Toots Thielemans quipped that his legs don't work but his mouth does after he was pushed onstage in a wheelchair to a standing ovation during the first of two Jazz at Lincoln Center concerts this weekend celebrating his 90 years. And once he put his harmonica to his lips, he more than lived up to his words.
Thielemans, who has been in poor health, had only played once this year at a summer jazz festival in his native Belgium and had cancelled all his other U.S. dates. JALC programming director Jason Olaine said that up to the last minute, the producers were not sure whether Thielemans would even be able to play at the tribute concerts.
But energized by an enthusiastic audience and his musical friends, Thielemans rose to the occasion. Among those paying tribute were American jazz pianists Herbie Hancock and Kenny Werner, and three Brazilian stars, guitarist-vocalist Dori Caymmi, pianist-vocalist Eliane Elias and guitarist Oscar Castro-Neves — all of whom appeared on Thielemans' two "Brasil Project" CDs in the early 1990s.
Thielemans, who turned 90 in April, was the first musician to create full-fledged jazz improvisations on the harmonica. But he's also made his mark in pop culture — as the whistler on the Old Spice commercials; playing harmonica on the themes for "Sesame Street" and the film "Midnight Cowboy;" and in performances with Paul Simon and Billy Joel. He was ennobled by Belgium's king as a baron in 2001 and received the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters award in 2009, the highest U.S. jazz honour.
Werner opened Friday night's concert at the Rose Theater by playing two ballads — Michel Legrand's "You Must Believe in Spring" and Bill Evans' "Very Early," which were on his 2001 duets album with Thielemans. Then Caymmi and Castro-Neves joined the band to play two Brazilian standards, including "Aquarela do Brasil," the title track of a 1969 recording Thielemans made with bossa nova singer Elis Regina that made him a hero to Brazilian musicians.
"When I heard Toots Thielemans for the first time, I'd like to tell you I was a baby," Caymmi said. "I was impressed like I was by Gil Evans, John Coltrane and Wes Montgomery."
Thielemans made his first appearance of the evening to play Caymmi's composition "Obsession" with the band; a Gershwin medley of "I Love You Porgy/Summertime" and Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Chega de Saudade," considered the first bossa nova song, with Werner; and Jacques Brel's "Ne me quitte pas" with Elias.
Hancock opened the second half by recalling that he first heard Thielemans when he was 14 years old with the George Shearing Quintet, a group he said greatly influenced him when he first became interested in jazz. He later played with Thielemans on records with Quincy Jones and others.
Hancock dedicated a spontaneously improvised piece — with lots of classical influences — to his Belgian friend, and then Thielemans joined him for a playful free-form duet loosely derived from Miles Davis' "Blue and Green." Thielemans stayed on stage to play a Sinatra medley ("All the Way/My Way") duet with Werner and joined with Elias to play her ballad "Moments," 'which he played on her first CD for Blue Note Records.
After Elias and Castro-Neves played several Brazilian tunes to give Thielemans a break, he returned one more time. He dedicated his composition "For My Lady" to his wife, Huguette.
"In this world I wouldn't certainly be here if it were not for my lady. She pays all the dues I should be paying," Thielemans said, addressing his wife in the audience before playing the tune with Werner and Castro-Neves.
All the musicians returned to the stage to play Thielemans' best known composition, "Bluesette," possibly the first swinging jazz waltz that was composed 50 years ago. Hancock and Elias engaged in some playful four-handed piano playing as the audience sang and clapped along with the musicians.
For an encore, Thielemans thanked everyone by caressingly playing "What a Wonderful World" — a dedication to Louis Armstrong. He exited the stage standing proudly, supported by his fellow musicians, as the audience serenaded him with "Happy Birthday."

SYLVAIN LUC SOLO « Standards »

Andy Sheppard: Thoughts and Trio Libero

By  Published: September 1, 2012
Andy Sheppard is pleased to be back; not back, as in making a return to music—he has never left—but back in Suffolk and, more particularly, back in Snape. Snape was where Trio Libero—consisting of French double bassist Michel Benita, drummer Sebastian Rochfordand saxophonist Sheppard—was born. The trio released its self-titled debut earlier in 2012 on the German ECM label.
Four days as resident artist a few years back led to lots of time spent in a recording studio in nearby Aldeburgh, where most of the tunes and arrangements were recorded. Sheppard, of course, is an experienced player and has worked with musicians including composer/arranger Gil Evans, and pianists Steve Lodder and Keith Tippett (with whom he made 66 Shades of Lipstick (Editions, 1990) with the proviso that none of the material be written down or prerecorded).
Sheppard is best, for me, when he is playing free. We discussed free form a while back and he commented that improvised jazz is always difficult and that it is far harder to get gigs now than 20 years ago; something echoed by many players I have spoken with.
When I spoke to Sheppard recently he had just played Lisbon and one of the things he noticed was there were more women and young people in the audience, so perhaps things are looking up?
Generally, he says, the scene has changed and he still believes improvisation is the very root of jazz music. Players vary, with some preferring to improvise completely whilst others play every note as written. Since he began playing, Sheppard has realized that improvisation is the most important component in music—more important than "swings and changes." It creates communication between the players and listeners. Sheppard's project, Sax Massive (see a recent Scumbles column), takes this improvisation to new levels and he feels it is a wonderful thing for people to come together through music.
As far as playing is concerned, Sheppard is more involved with Trio Libero than improvisation right now but is aware that London's club, The Vortex, is really good at the moment for offering a mix of genres, including free form jazz, and that the London scene, as a whole, is vibrant. Conversely, he is aware also that what is happening in London is not spreading, or not spreading as quickly as people might think it should.
As to the future, Sheppard is aware of many young musicians out there. Sax Massive has made him realize the importance of contact with the audience and that there are so many people interested in playing. However, there are fewer places to play.
It is important to understand Sheppard's philosophy. He believes musicians, venues and audiences have a responsibility. It should be his and other musicians' mission to create new clubs and venues. He hopes musicians will realize it is a responsible job to make music for the world. As for the audience's role, they should take care of players. ''When playing,'' he advises, ''put anything in, regardless of the tag or style it is labeled as or comes across as; don't worry about these things as a player. Musicians should play what they want but sometimes may have to compromise in order to take the audience with them. It is part of the equation. You have to keep bands going but you have to have places to play and you have to play to people and relate to them. Be responsible, otherwise you could waste a lot of energy and time." Above all, Sheppard suggests that you should be truthful.
This, then, was the background to the Trio Libero concert at Snape Maltings on August 19, 2012. Given what I knew, I was expecting a Sheppard who played free, although, because he was playing with two other first-class musicians and it was a concert of the album, I expected some restraint. Given the views he had expressed, I expected him to use the wonderful acoustics of Snape to let the music fly, rise and fall. Whatever I was expecting, it was not what I got. Trio Libero are unique. There was so much to be positive about in this performance. The music itself was structured and well put together; each musician's individual playing was sublime and there was communication going on between the members of the trio at all times.
